About me

Lou Johnson

BA (Hons)
PGCE Art and Design

I’ve always loved art, craft, and design—and I’m passionate about teaching too! Art has been a source of joy and self-expression for me throughout my life.

After completing my Art Foundation, I went on to earn a degree in Costume Design and Making at the London College of Fashion. My desire to share my passion for art led me to train as an Art Teacher, completing my PGCE in Art and Design at Brighton University. Since then, I’ve spent 18 years teaching and working with students of all ages.

I began teaching in secondary schools, but for the past 16 years, I was Head of Art at a wonderful prep school, where I taught children from Year 3 to Year 8. Over the years, I’ve led school trips and organised dynamic whole-school Arts Weeks, collaborating with brilliant artists and bringing creative projects to life. Watching young minds light up with creativity and helping them grow has been one of the greatest privileges of my career.

Being dyslexic, I understand how challenging school can be at times. My own experiences have given me the empathy and insight to support students as they navigate their own obstacles, encouraging them to thrive through creative expression.

As a mum to two young girls, I know first-hand the importance of nurturing children’s creativity and confidence. Being a parent has deepened my understanding of how art can inspire curiosity, foster individuality, and bring joy into children’s lives.

Now, I’m embarking on an exciting new adventure with Starty Arty—a space dedicated to nurturing children’s creativity and individuality. My goal is to inspire children to explore, imagine, and create in a fun, supportive environment where they can truly be themselves.

I look forward to welcoming your children to Starty Arty and can’t wait to see the incredible things they’ll create!

As a member of The Tutors Association, with an enhanced DBS check, you can feel confident that your children will be in safe, professional hands as they discover the joy of art.
